Exercise Notes: Working out the Ego

Having just gotten back into exercising, I am noticing something that I don't want to grow, but keeps showing up while I exercise - my ego.  You see I used to lift heavy weights, the operative words being used to, but now is a whole different story.

So why does this bring up ego...well, something inside of me keeps wanting to go heavy even though I am just starting back into it.  Afterall, I don't want to look weak in the gym - ooh, that would be horrible - afterall, those people in the gym have some sort of bearing on my life - the reality, is they don't.

So what am I doing about it?  I am exercising my mind while working out and concentrating on what is important during my workout - me and what my body is saying.  This is all that is truly important - that isn't to say that I am one of those standing in front of the mirror flexing, or letting out massive grunts while bench pressing 135lbs (yes, I actually saw this), or dropping the big weights on the floor.  It is all so annoying to see those people who think they are impressing others when in all likelihood, they just look like dopes.  Sorry I just had to rant.

So if you find yourself being too self-conscious about others and caring what they are thinking - don't - think about yourself.  Exercise your mind by focusing on what you are doing - focus on your breathing or your muscles contracting as you lift or lower the weight in the correct path.  Do this, and your exercise session will be much more effective and enjoyable.
